A waterborne disease is an illness that arises from an infected water supply, and is typically transmitted when the water is used for drinking or cooking.

The term is used generically, and by default, the consequences of individual diseases are often ignored or discounted as being of near equal risk. There probably are a host of relatively benign bacteria and microscopic organisms that do little or no long term harm if consumed.
